I don’t even know where to start in blogging about Robert & Rebecca’s New Orleans wedding. As a couple, they were every photographer’s dream – totally laid back, fun-loving. Ridiculously in love with one another, and just over-the-top happy to be getting married. And they had every reason to be anxious or nervous about the ceremony, too. Up to 18 hours before the ceremony was scheduled to take place, there was a ONE HUNDRED PERCENT chance of rain in Jackson Square. And not just “rain” – THUNDERSTORMS. They could have freaked out. Could have worried, there could have been tears. But not for this couple! They’d had umbrellas made up with their names and wedding date on them, for just such an eventuality.
And we all know what happens when we *plan* for rain, right? They bought umbrellas, I bought rain gear for my equipment. And there was not a cloud in the sky for their wedding day (See? That’s how you do it, folks. You’re welcome). The umbrellas they’d bought for rain suddenly became sun-shades for their guests, and Robert and Rebecca got married, y’all!
I just couldn’t stop smiling at the way Robert looked at Rebecca. Whether she was looking at him or not, he just couldn’t get enough just looking at her.
It was the sweetest thing. I’m pretty sure no one else in the world existed for him for the thirty minutes that their ceremony, by Sensational Ceremonies, lasted. Likewise, she just loved him to pieces, and didn’t stop smiling for what I’m pretty sure was the entire day.
And seriously, can we talk about this second line, now? If you’re not familiar with the tradition, New Orleans weddings are often followed by second lines through the Quarter – the couple is paraded through the streets, followed by a brass band, and everyone dances, and waves handkerchiefs, and random passers-by treat the couple like celebrities, basically. It’s pretty magical, seeing what seems to be an entire city celebrate with the newleyweds. And these two rocked their second-line, put on by Frenchmen Street Productions. They danced, and he sang to her and kissed her hand, and a random guy in a Mardi Gras hat drunk-toasted them, and I was pretty much the happiest photographer ever that day.
Their reception, at The House of Blues, was so, so epic. There was dancing, and Robert sang to Rebecca, and the DJ was on point, and everyone had a blast, from the kids down to the older relatives who danced like they were still sixteen, thank-you-very-much.
More than anything on a wedding day, it’s the moments that I chase – the ones that bring back smiles to couples’ faces as they page through their wedding album years from now, and are fodder for stories told to children and grand-children. This day was full of moments. Moments between grandparents, parents and guests; happy moments when I was half-convinced these two would start crowd-surfing at any moment, and quiet moments when the rest of the world just seemed to fall away for them.
I loved every last single second of this wedding, and I’m so happy for these two. <3
