Baton Rouge family photography is one of my all-time favorite things to photograph – and these guys are some of my all-time favorite subjects!
So, naturally, when mom Katie (a fellow photographer herself, over at KVR Photography) asked me to photograph their family for the day, I was all over it!
People ask me, “What should we do?” whenever they inquire about a Day in the Life session, and my answer is always the same. I tell them to do whatever they normally do, and the rest will take care of itself! The beauty of family photojournalism is that your life already provides such wonderful material to document, but as parents, we are often so busy in the trenches that we struggle to see our daily magic with an objective eye. Moms especially struggle (myself included!) with getting in the frame. We seem to always be the ones taking the photos, while we forget that our children will one day want to remember us as they have seen us in their mind’s eye, growing up. A documentary family photography session is a perfect way of preserving these memories for our children!
So, I was very excited to be asked to document this family’s story. To make things even more fun, they rented some scuba gear from a nearby dive shop to get some really cool, out-of-the-box family images underwater! How cool is that?!
And…can we talk about the funniest birds of all of the birds? I don’t even know his name, but that guy made my day!
THIS KID…she was a hot mess. And I loved every second.
Brothers – never leaving sisters alone for a hot second, since the dawn of time.
What kid hasn’t made a jumping game out of a parking lot excursion?
Trip got fitted for his…thingamajig. Don’t ask me what it was called, but it looked hella cool, at least!
Stevie was…less than excited that she didn’t qualify for tank usage.
I love father-daughter moments!
Fish faces in a dive shop, while a scuba mannequin looks on…I couldn’t love this more.
I mean…if you don’t look at your kid in utter bafflement at least once a day, I’m not sure you’re doing things right, really.
Stevie was obsessed with this bird. *I* was obsessed with this bird. The dive shop owner is lucky that he didn’t go home in one of our bags, really.
It’s okay, Stevie. I look like this when I get out of a big truck, too.
This dog knew where his bread was buttered, man.
Swimming = fun. Getting ready for swimming = not so fun, especially when you have hair with its very own personality.
Oh, Trip…up for anything, sweetest kid on the planet, and sporting a scuba suit. Subjects don’t get better than this!
I love that this image from Baton Rouge Family Photography has a whole story going on in it – dad thumbs-upping Trip, and Stevie swimming to mom. <3
Sharks. They’re everywhere these days! (If you’re not singing the song right now, in your head….)
Mermaid flippers for the WIN!
SING IT WITH ME…”Baaaaaaaby shark, doo doo, doo doo doo….” (You’re welcome)
Stevie makes the best faces. “WHAT HAVE I DONE?!”
When there’s only one iPad, but a girl’s gotta have some entertainment while she eats!
Okay, so: Stevie is an amazing, bendy, pretzel-y little bundle of awesome. She cheers (and will soon be on the field at a Saints game!) and made me hurt so many times just looking at her throughout this day! She couldn’t stop bending and stretching and begging her mom to help her practice. That’s an impressive amount of gumption in such a tiny package!
Sometimes the end of the session is a great time for some quiet, simple portraits on the fly. I love how Trip looks like such a little man, here. A lot of times, kids adopt the mannerisms of adults in their lives without anyone even noticing (which is another reason why we take photographs!)
Stevie had a hard day, y’all. A girl’s gotta get her rest! 😉
